Biography

A title is a small piece of staging. Mistress puts the viewer in the second person and the performer in the position of authority; it promises a scene organised around command, permission and refusal rather than around display alone. That is the register the alias announces, and it is worth separating from the woman herself: a billing is a promise about tone, not a description of character. The plain name and the titled one sit side by side on the record, which means a viewer can arrive at either. One reads as a model's name. The other reads as an instruction.
